What Worship Is
“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24).
Into the darkness where I am not afraid to go, I will come. I will find you. You think you do the things you do in secret, that no one notices or cares. But I see you and am with you. I do not depart. I do not leave your side.
With Me with you, always with you, how do you worship Me? How do you choose to see Me, recognize Me, adjust the eyes of your heart to know where I am, with you?
My daughter, I turn your heart to Me, but you get to choose how I turn it, whether or not to acknowledge my presence in you.
Don’t turn away, my love.
Breathe in and know Me, daughter. Breathe out and know I’ve made you. Worshiping Me means listening and believing, in the moment, I am here . . . and letting Me help you see my face.
I have so much to show you. Just let Me show you all the places I am. In your work, in your home, in your relationships, in your dreams, in your personality . . . your actions, your frame, your voice, the curve of your chin and your jaw, the delight in your eyes. Yes, it is there.
I give you delight in your eyes, your heart for Me.
You don’t have to work so hard to chase anything down. Chase Me down and try to abandon all the things you wish would change.
Worship Me and all things look different. Worship Me with truth, for the renewed heart I give you, all fresh and clean and beautiful. And from that place of freedom and joy and new perspective, the journey with Me begins.
Let it begin, child.

Nothing can transform our hearts like allowing Holy Spirit to speak to us—heal us, love us, convict us, see us—through His Word. There are countless ways to do this: reading through the Bible in a year, studying a particular book of the Bible in depth, or going through inspired devotionals. If you’re looking for your next study, I have a resource to share with you: Rapt’s free 30-day Bible-reading plan. I pray it gently leads you to meditate on nourishing truth, wrestle with hard questions, and pray with expectation.
Will you pray with me today? → “Let there be no separation between us, Father. Keep my heart inside yours. Give me Your emotions, Your outlook, Your perspective. Make my heart Your heart, Your desires my desires, Your joy my joy, Your concerns my concerns. Father, what are Your concerns? What are Your concerns for me?” … He responds: Plunge in. Do not be afraid. See the deep water. See the waves. The water is cold. Toes in. Then torso. Duck your head. Go under, under. All the way in. Go under the water with Me. Close your eyes. Am I covering you? Do you feel Me all around? I am around you and within you. ⇒ Read more…
Do you remember the story of Jesus visiting Mary and Martha? How Martha was so distracted with serving and cleaning and cooking, while Mary was happy just to sit at her Teacher’s feet and listen to Him speak. I long to be like Mary, and sometimes, it’s even easy to be like Mary—when life is quiet, when I’m by myself in my garden or baking bread or praying in the stillness of my room. But it’s much more difficult when life is chaotic, when the kids are home for a visit, when requests and responsibilities pile up … Oh, it’s harder then, which is why I appreciate this sweet article about abiding by Cara Ray, author of The Pursuit of Holy Leisure. It’s a worthwhile read, dear friend, if you have a few extra minutes today.
