Us Two, and No Other

“I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols” (Isaiah 42:8).

My daughter, it is no mistake how I made you. It is no mistake the way you speak, the desires of your heart, the reason I call you what I do. To question the crafting of you is a question for Me, a question about my plan for you, a question about whether what is ahead for you is good and whether I can be trusted.

What do you hold on to other than Me? What is more solid than I am? What is more strong? What is more loving? What is more dependable? Do you know how I adore you? Do you know how much I love being near you? Do you know I love it when you pause, when you look up, looking for Me, and realize I am here?

For it is then that you allow me to hold you. You see my face and you behold glimpses of my glory and you want to stay with Me . . . And I hold you. I love when you pause and trust Me and want to be with Me and I get to hold you. It is just beautiful here, together, my daughter.

There will be a day when you behold me, full on. There will be no temptations to separate us. There will be no distractions by this world. But I will help you turn towards Me now, so you don’t have to wait. It is best for you, for your heart, to not wait. I don’t want you to miss what I have for you now. Not tomorrow, not a week or a year ahead. I want to give you the gift of my love right now. Right now.

It is so good to be together, to have you slow and feel my arms wrapped around your shoulders. There is a place where the two of us can go, and I want you to see it. It is the place where we go, just us two. It is your favorite place, the place of your every desire, your very heart’s cry. And you’re not alone there. I am with you. I am the only one who can satisfy these cries of your heart. Will you let Me? Will you let Me now?

“I spent so much of my life running—running from discomfort, from my children’s big emotions, from rest, from anything that felt like suffering. But the moment I finally stopped running, I started to find God right in the places I had been trying to avoid.” —Dominique Young, on Rapt Interviews. I can’t help but nod silently as I read those words … running from discomfort … from my own terrifying emotions … from experiencing others’ emotions, too. But what are we running from, really, if not from ourselves—or from God, who is trying to speak to us in those vulnerable places? Friend, I pray we would stop running. I pray that so earnestly.

So many of us believe we have to perform some sort of ritual to connect with God. We forget that He is right here, with us, never leaving, not even for a moment. In this episode of the Captivating podcast, Staci Eldredge and Stacey Burton chat about what it means to meet with God in the midst of our most ordinary days. And let me tell you … it’s a pure delight listening to these two women. After you listen to it, reply to this email and let me know what God spoke to your heart. How can I be praying for you, sister? I can tell you honestly that I already do.

“Survey after survey confirms that most people in our supposedly secular Western societies still interact with God. We don’t approach chemotherapy thinking, ‘I suppose I ought to pray about this, but I just can’t be bothered.’ We tend not to welcome newborn babies into the world with the words, ‘Behold, a biological fluke born into a meaningless universe.’ No one ever stared up at a murmuration of starlings at dusk, or out to sea under a stormy sunset, and whispered, ‘Wow, I’m awestruck by my own magnificence.’ Human beings are hard-wired to worship. You have been meticulously made with an extraordinary ability to walk and talk with God. In fact, the Bible says that your primary purpose—the reason for which you were born—is to enjoy a real, conversational relationship with an infinitely loving divinity—which is why you almost certainly hear Him already, more than you realize.” → From How to Hear God by Pete Grieg. (You can read a longer excerpt here.) How are you worshipping this week, sister? What songs are flowing from your heart? What physical spaces evoke within you wonder and awe for your heavenly Savior?
